I try to send myself emails when the kids do funny or say funny things. Here is a random list that of ones I found in my emails.

Reese starting say, “Now Sebastian, what did you do wrong?” When she knows he is in trouble.

Reese – Mama kannst du einen Rasenmäher für deine Beine bitte benutzen. ( Mama can you please use a lawnmower for you legs, please?)

Reese – Mama I’m Melt (She was crying, but kept saying melt)

Reese – Chick a ley shake milk (Chick Fil A Milk Shake)

Reese – Mama look a big Sandburg(sandcastle) to a pile of dirt outside of a house that is being renovated

Reese – Mama, when I am older and am a potato, I’m going to wear a hat. (Age 2.5 She had never seen a Mr. Potato head as far as we know at this point.)

Reese – Papa, I don’t want a kiss, your face is too grumpy (grumpy- prickly or unshaven.)

(Right after we arrive at the airport after the kids and I were gone in Texas last fall)
When the kids and I made it to the airport and saw grant both kids ran toward grant yelling papa. They both ran into his arms and were so excited. Reese kept going back for more hugs and even teared up she was so happy. It almost made us cry, and then she even commented, “Mama, I have waters in my eyes.” Meaning tears. As she was smiling at papa. It is a memory, I hope we never forget.

Sebastian – I COME, I COME (When he knows he is supposed to be coming, and he says it with a tone of exasperation as if he is rolling his eyes at me.)

Sebastian – Come Mama, Come (when he wants us to come play with him or follow him.)

Sebastian – Lecker (Yummy in German.. he uses this as a question or statement a lot)

Sebastian – Eleballap (Was how he used to say Elefanten or Elephant)

Sebastian – Eese (Reese)

Sebastian – Basti (How he refers to himself since his name is long and difficult to say)

Have a great night!

Reese has a yearly Christmas program at her “School.” Last year, she was old enough to participate, but ended up being sick so we missed it. This year she was super sel et musculation excited to be able to attend even if she was sad that she couldn’t be an angel. This year, she was a shepherd in her class.

Reese and her school singing, “We Three Kings.” One boy behind her, kept bugging her, so we felt kind of bad that she had to deal with that. The girl next to her was very excited about her stick on earrings which are always a huge hit.

If you want to be crazy and watch the whole program, you can see it here. They really did learn a lot of songs, and Reese was practicing all of the time.

What was Sebastian doing you might ask, well he was happily singing along to each song. He was too young to participate, but knew the gist of most of the songs since we were singing them for months now at home.

She was very sad when it was all over, and they no longer practiced for the program at school.

I hope that you have a great day.

We sent out this card, and no our children were not really on the wall. The kid’s matching Harry Potter PJs were from Target.

I have been wanting a reusable Advent Calendar for our kids to use, and have been looking online all over the place to buy one. I had a very specific type I was looking for as well as one that has 24 pockets rather than 25 since we celebrate our Christmas on the 24th. After seeing a few different ones I likes and their price tags, I realized it would be worth it to make my own.

VIA

I have been eyeing this Ferm Living Advent Calendar a lot, but alas it is so expensive(around $65 plus another $55 for international shipping), and not 100% what I want. I like the color scheme, but wanted it a tad more simple on the top and bottom.

VIA

A year after sewing mine, they came out with this calendar, so kind of by accident, I made my own fusion of the two calendars.

Here is how my final calendar turned out. I love it, but if there was one thing I would change is I would switch the thicker black portion to the bottom and the thinner portion to the top just like the calendar above did. But if you are now going to sew your own, you are in luck and can learn from my mistakes.

First I ironed my fabrics which is always the step I like least of sewing, but makes such a huge difference!

I cut my main background piece to 41″ tall by 21″ wide. This gave me half an inch to fold under on the edges. I doubled up my muslin fabric since it was pretty sheer, but if you have a thicker cotton fabric, this probably won’t be necessary.Cut off all of the raw edges so you are working with nice square edges.

Here you can see my back panel.

I then cut the 26″wide(can be shorter, but just a tad wider than the back panel so you can fold it over to hide the edges) by 8″ tall strips.

After I had these six cut I ironed them again.

Iron them folded in half (hot dog style) since I wanted each of my pockets to be close to 4″ tall. Then open your bias tape, and put it on top of the pocket strips to his the raw edges.

Pin them in place.

Sew the bias tape to the top of each of the strips with white or beige thread.

Now you can lay those onto your back panel.

For your black piece of fabric, I cut them to be about 28″ wide and 8″ tall for the top one and 28″ wide by 6″ tall for the bottom one. I wish I had switched where I sewed on the two, but that is personal preference. I ironed them in half, and then ironed down a 1/4″ hem on the front and back so the raw edges were underneath.

I used the black fabric as almost large biased tape to hide my raw edges on the top and bottom.

Then I pinned all of my pockets down.

Next I sewed the bottom edge of each pocket piece without hitting the bias tape of the pocket below. That way they all still open.

Next, I sewed on the black top and bottom portion, then I sewed a channel that was wide enough for the dowel rod to fit through. I wish I would have hemmed the black portion in at the top so it wouldn’t have been a raw edge around the dowel rod, but again learn from my mistake.

Here I measured and pinned to have 4 pockets on each row to equal my 24 pockets. I then pinned and drew a line with my marking pen. The first line I did 5″ from the left edge, then a line at 10″ from the left edge, and then a line from 15″ from the left edge.I sewed straight down from the top to the bottom of each line so each pocket was separated.

I then folded under the sides and sewed the edges to give it a clean look. I decided to to do the little tabs on the calendars above due to lack of patience to do it, but I do love the look of it.

I manually had to turn under the portion of the top black and hem it since it was too raw around the dowel rod, but it worked out. Start trimming threads.

Clean up the back as well. I slowly and carefully cut off the excess fabric so it would hang better.

I then had a friend use her Cricut to cut out the numbers and stars that I needed for the calendar from the iron on vinyl. However, if this isn’t an option, you can trace the numbers on to the back of the vinyl and cut them out by hand which is doable if a little bit time consuming. Or you can paint them on with the freezer paper method which you can google.

I then centered each number on each pocket.I then followed the instructions on the package and ironed on the numbers one row at a time with my iron and dish cloth.Be careful with muslin as if a hot iron is on it too long it will start to discolor. I didn’t realize it until it was too late.

I am so happy with how it turned out, and it has held up really well. The first year, we filled it with candy and chocolate we normally don’t buy before we had kids. Then with just one daughter, we filled it with mini toys, fuzzy socks, bath tub crayons, expanding wash cloths found in the dollar section of Target. We don’t do stockings, so this was our version at that point. Now, I printed out family activities to do each day as a family which I much prefer over candy/chocolate or toys.

Below are two other advent calendar tutorials that I used to help plan how I wanted to make mine. Theirs are slightly different in construction, but might be helpful to read or if you want to tweak my design to fit your taste.

Gail came for a visit for Sebastian’s Birthday.

We went on a camping trip with friends at Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee.

Sebastian is getting better at using a spoon since he still turns it over in his mouth.

Sebastian is still napping once a day normally from 1:00-4:00pm, but testogel kaufen camping means a much shorter nap since it is louder, hotter, and brighter in the tent. Here is Sebastian in his pack n play and Reese on her cot.

We don’t let the kiddos watch much TV, but Sebastian being the second has seen more than Reese ever did at this point. He loves it and always wants a blanket if we do let them watch a TV show or movie. We try to make sure if they do watch anything that it is always in German so at least they are hearing German.

Gail came for it, Mama and Papa facetimed in, and I can’t remember why, but we didn’t make it to Nashville to do a second little celebration.

Reese is shy around other people, but when she is home with us or friends, she always wants to talk to us or have us play with her. He is also our dancer, in this picture we are at Concerts at the Dock which is free live Music, and he always dances.

The kids had their first hotel stay this month. We had some things to do in Atlanta, and we all had to be present so they had a blast checking out the Marriot in downtown.

Sebastian slept in his pack n play, but Reese got to sleep in a big bed for the first time ever. Sebastian hit his head so many times in the hotel room from tripping on the carpet, and not noticing corners and edges. Reese was more cautious by nature when she was younger where Sebastian is more rough and tumble.

The kids had their first trip to Ikea while in Atlanta. Sebastian wants to do whatever Reese is doing, so here he is laying in her “toddler” bed. We say it was time to go to bed and he sprinted to her bed, and then later would climb into his crib with our help.

Right now I get a lot of people asking if they are twins when shopping because they are sitting down and they look close in height, but once standing there is a definite difference. Sebastian is heavier than Reese was, and there isn’t much of a difference between the two.

We have been trying on lots of hats lately since Reese has been interested in them.

Sebastian has a mean squat and can sit and play like this for a long time.
He is more daring with climbing and jumping off of things like at this indoor playground at a local mall.

Sebastian is very sweet. If he does something that isn’t nice like smack you, he will right away come back and gently coo at you while he strokes the area he hit once he realizes it wasn’t good to do. He always has very pale skin that can tan if we work up to it slowly. He also gets very flushed in his face when he cries or is very hot from playing outside.

He is our participator. He loves interacting with books and people and songs. Reese will do most things at home and sing songs she knows, but at story time she will stay quiet and suck her thumb or observe things around her. Sebastian is 100% participating, listening, and excited about everything. He also is more antsy and is ready to run around before a story time is even over, but he normally holds out because they do enough things to keep him engaged.

Sand, playing in sand can keep him happy for literal hours.

Sebastian does all of the main baby sign language signs that Reese did at this point too. Please, more, all done, drink, eat, etc. It is so helpful as well as saying more “words.”

Sebastian and I tend to be morning people, but occasionally mornings are a little slow after Grant goes to work.

I weaned Sebastian slowly this month, I used the same process as I did with Reese.

Our kids never really napped on us, but when I was transferring him from the car to his bed, I did enjoy some snuggles for a bit. We had been at Reese’s School for a program. He had such a blast, but it wore him out.

Stacking cans was his game of choice for WEEKS, and it was kind of awesome.

I always think it is funny how different our kids look. I wonder when they get older if people will be able to tell they are siblings or not.

Sebastian is an avid smoothie stealer.

Sebastian likes playing with playdoh, but prefers to tear it into into pieces and put it into a container rather than other forms of play at this point.

Even though his face doesn’t show it, he loves story time and puppet shows that they put on.

Instead of coloring a ton, he tends to quickly draw a few lines on his paper, and then proceeds to put crayons into and out of the ziploc bag they come in at the Library.

Here is his current favorite toy at library.

He is fine with grocery shopping, but gets bored quicker than Reese so occasionally I bring raisins as a snack which is big because we don’t really snack between meals.

The Thule Chariot is still a favorite. If he sees it out, he launches himself into it in hopes we are taking it on a bike ride or walk.

Well, Week 7 is now in the books, and I am playing catch up, but here are some of the meals that I we ate this week. Grant and I have been loving eating this way. The one hour workouts are really wearing on us mentally because it seems so long, but once the 80 days is up I plan to switch back to the 30 minute workouts. However, I think we plan to continue eating this way. We really like how much more prepared we are, and especially how much healthy food we eat. We also have almost no waste as far as food goes which is a huge change from before. We hated how much food was wasted, but just never had a good game plan on how to change that.

This week we also had this summer sausage from Aldi, it is pretty inexpensive. I cut it diagonal like that so the skin doesn’t seem as tough. I heat it in a skillet with a little bit of coconut oil and cook them until a hot throughout and a little crispy.

Or I eat the same thing with Bratwurst, above is a chicken bratwurst from Aldi, and we normally buy our broccoli and green beans frozen from Sam’s Club because they are the best priced and you get real florets not only stems.

These Paleo Fajitas are made in the oven, and are super quick.

For the kiddos, we cut up some of the meat, onions, and bell peppers and add them to quesadillas for them since that is easier to eat. Grant and I measure out our meat and veggie portions and eat them on two small corn tortillas.

This week, I also made homemade spaghetti using the following sauce recipe. Here you can see a Saturday dinner, I didn’t have as much meat in my portion of the sauce, so I added a few piece of smoked sausage. Then raw veggies on the side, and whole wheat noodles. On the weekends, we eat a random assortment of food. Whatever is premade in the fridge, we will combine into meals so we waste less.

Brown Ground beef in your pot. Without draining add in onions and cook until silvery. Next add the garlic and cook for a minute or so. Next add the canned tomatoes and tomato sauce. Then add in seasonings, and let it simmer so it can reduce and thicken for about 20-40 minutes until you have your sauce consistency that you prefer. I don’t add the extra water, but if you prefer you can add that too. If measuring the meat is an issues add frozen meat balls instead and you olive oil or coconut oil to sauté onions.

We had friends over for dinner this week, so we made FISH tacos. Grant and I ate them with corn tortillas, but boy are they good. Portion out the fish on your tacos for one Red, the cabbage mixture with onions as 1 Green, and the two small corn tortillas as one Yellow.

So this is week 6, and out first ReFeed day where we get to eat more carbs with white flours and fruits to help rebuild stuff in the muscles. Refeed day was worse for me, because it helped some of my cravings come back, but all in all it was nice eat ing more fruit and “healthier” sweets and different carbs for a change. Instead of doing the meal plan break out, I figured I would just list the meals that we ate in random orders this week as more of a meal plan inspiration.

Find the French Toast Scramble recipe here.

Still French Toast scramble on the list.

If you are wanting another option than this, you can make these 2 Ingredient Pancakes. I normally add blueberries to mine while in the pan so they get nice and warm too, but this blogger sometimes just add some peanut butter to it. So the containers are almost the same as my scramble above. Also, on either of these recipes, the more ripe your bananas, the sweeter they will taste.

This week I was a little bit more adventurous and added spinach to the batter, the kids were a little hesitant to try it because it doesn’t look very tasty, but now love it. I don’t love hiding veggies in foods, but this was just an easy way to add extract greens to a meal. I tried adding it to french toast scramble above and it was okay. The kids ate it, but it wasn’t my favorite.

On Saturday and Sundays, we have started making our favorite Protein Pancake Recipe. It comes out to 1.5 Red, 1 Yellow, and 2 teaspoons with the peanut butter with 8 small pancakes being one serving size. Since we add chocolate chips, we don’t add chocolate chips to our chunky monkey in the evenings.

If you like Iced Coffee, then you can always give Dunkin Donuts a try. They have flavor shots NOT SWIRLS, which don’t have sugar added. So I occasionally get an iced coffee with almond milk, and a shot of french vanilla and hazelnut. It isn’t sweet, but has some flavor and is a nice indulgence at times.

I made this Greek Strawberry Banana Shake Recipe. It was a nice change up meal wise.

If you need a quick grab and go side in your meals, this Lentil soup, from aldi is pretty tasty. Just heat it up, and measure out your portions to count as 1 Yellow and 1 Green. Also, adding a splash of balsamic vinegar makes it super good. Sebastian also really likes it where Reese isn’t thrilled with it.

Then my shake which I use THIS powder instead of Shakeology because it is much cheaper and has very similar nutrition. Then it shows what others things I added to my shake above. It is only green because I like adding spinach to my shakes since I can’t taste it, and it is an easy way to add greens. (I like Mocha and chocolate flavors the best.)

We did Fajitas again this week, this time we saved all our Blue for dinner so we could make them more like a fajita Quesadilla. We used this recipe.

I’m not a fan of corn tortillas, but this brand , which I found at Walmart, is super tasty. Trust me, the uncooked is worth it!

On Refeed day, we are able to eat some white pasta and other items like that. I found this shrimp and crab ravioli at Aldi which is amazing! A whole bag is 4 yellow servings, so I only made half, and saved the other for the next refeed day. After boiling, I put a small amount of olive oil, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and Italian Seasoning (knorr German) on it. I also added a tad bit of smoked summer sausage to make sure there was enough protein in the meal above.

Part of the week we used the Deutsche Kuche Bratwurst from Aldi for meals, but later switched to the smoked sausage.

We also ate a lot of roasted potatoes using this recipe since it is easy to make and lasts well when meal prepping.

We also did some Eggs with pureed spinach with roasted poatoes as one of our lunches. It is quick, easy, and yummy; not to mention cheaper since the protein is from eggs. I like to top it with some homemade salsa.

Here is a gluten free brownie recipe that I am really happy with. It uses chickpeas instead of flour, and I think it tastes good. Is it the best brownie ever? No, but I don’t feel like I am eating a “healthy” dessert. It is officially approved for 80 day obsession, but I wouldn’t go around eating it all of the time, but for occasions where you are craving sweets you could use this to help satisfy that craving.
As I mentioned I have a sweet tooth, so at night I have been saving a fruit, and containers for a peanut butter. I don’t do this every night, but sometimes I make Chunky Monkey. It is one frozen banana that is ground until smooth in a strong blender. It will take a bit of time and you will need to scrape down the sides, but once it looks like soft serve ice cream add peanut butter, and top with a dash of cinnamon and a few mini chocolate chips. It is really really good. I have seen others make this ice cream as a base and add in just fruits to make it taste more like a sorbet. I hope you enjoy.

Hope you have a great week.

Wow, here we are at week 5 which is also the start of Phase 2. This week has been rough for me, the workouts are longer again, all of the workouts are new, and getting up at 5 when you don’t get enough sleep makes me cranky. However, I lost 3 pounds and 2.5 inches during phase 1 so not too shabby. Anyway, this phase I decided to add an extra red to my count even if I am still in Plan B due to the fact that the others on this meal plan take the beach body recover which is pretty much like a protein powder which counts as a red. Below is our meal plan which is kind of thrown together last minute. We had a lot of stuff planned on the weekend, so I feel like I am still trying to catch up.

Find the French Toast Scramble recipe here.

I know our breakfasts are a broken record, but right now we are all liking them so I will leave them as is.

So for one of our lunches during the week, we have done roasted potatoes following this recipe, topped with eggs and spinach which are cooked together topped with cheese. It is really good, but the spinach pieces were sometimes chewy. So I tried pureeing the spinach with the eggs and then cooking them. As you can see they are REALLY green. However, they taste just like normal eggs, so I think we will continue to have them this way even if they do look super crazy.

For some of the lunches and dinners above, we mix up the meats, sometimes rotisserie chicken, bratwurst, smoked kielbasa sausage, etc. Then which ever veggies are on sale is what we go with right now it was broccoli, but up on the plan I might have written roasted squash and zucchini because that is what we could get cheaper. Same goes for the carb as well. Sometimes I make mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, sometimes I make them into “fries” that are baked in the oven. So have fun and switch things up.

I made chicken salad from a rotisserie chicken. They are very affordable at Sam’s Club or Costco, and I just would shred all of the chicken, and make my salad. HERE is my original recipe, but I did alter it a tad for this to make sure it wasn’t too fatty or sugary.

1 Rotisserie Chicken shredded (or 3 cups diced cooked chicken)

1/4 cup Helmann’s mayonnaise

1 cup red grapes, halved

1 stalk celery, diced (if you don’t like the texture, add celery seeds to give the same flavor, I do this in pot pie sometimes. Or just mince really really small.)

1/2 cup crushed Pineapple

salt and pepper to taste

pecans or cashews, optional

In a bowl, combine the chicken, mayo, grapes, celery, pineapple, salt, cashews, and pepper. Combine until well mixed.

Serve on a wrap, shredded lettuce, or on a lettuce leaf. You can always adjust it. I filled a red container a little bit heaping and counted it as 1 red and 1/2 a purple since I prefer my chicken salad sweeter and used the fruit to do that for me. Also, I have a friend who adds shredded carrots to her which makes it orange, but tastes amazing. So next time I will add some shredded carrots.

My friend Lindsey shared this recipe with me, and I LOVE IT! It is a Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili that can be made in a regular or instant pot. It has a good sweet and slightly spicy taste depending on how much chili powder you add. This is a keeper, which I make after I stop counting my containers. It is really good for lunches too.

I also realized that I could do chocolate covered strawberries if I don’t go crazy with them. So I plan to make a batch to have one or two in the evening instead of chunky monkey. The link under the picture is for a recipe that uses shakeology if you are looking for something like that.

I meant to write this post earlier, but life feels so busy lately especially with hour daily workouts and lots of meal prep. I do have to admit that I love our family routine lately. However, this past January, I was blessed enough to turn 30. I never grew up with extravagance at birthdays or birthday weeks as some of my friends do. I remember when growing up we got to pick dinner the night of birthday, we woke up to a few presents from our siblings most of them handmade and a gift from our parents. When we got older and had birthday parties, we mostly had them at home with cake, a bag or M&Ms scattered on the table as my dad’s version of decorating, and also a dinner my parents would make for my friends. I almost always picked Homemade Spaghetti and either a Black Forest Cake made by my mother or pies. We played lots of different German games, or had sleep overs with just a few friends when we were older.

Now that I’m older, I would always just hope I would get a Happy Birthday wish from my family and some friends, and that was enough. One of my friends throws her own Birthday Brunch as an excuse to get together with her friends, and I had so much fun at them that I decided to host my own. One of my friends found out, and said that one was not aloud to host their own 30th Birthday Brunch. So she was amazing enough to host it at her house. On the actual day of my birthday, I was in a pretty crummy mood. The day was very tiring and wearing, and the going out to dinner with a friend ended up falling through, and I was feeling like a failure as a mother that day due to losing my temper too often. The Friday following my birthday was my brunch. I was very excited, but wasn’t sure how it was going to go with both kids with me at the brunch.

That morning, Grant surprised me by taking the day off and watching the kids while I went to brunch alone. This was a huge treat as I got to chat and eat with my friends. I think more than 14 people came which was also wonderful. When I got my friend Lindsey’s house, I noticed a Toyota Tacoma in the drive way. I wondered whose vehicle it was since I didn’t know of any of my friends having a truck, but a few of the husbands did. I went inside to find Kira there for my brunch as a surprise. I was floored. I guess Grant, my friend Lindsey, and Kira had all planned this without my knowledge. I felt so loved and surprised to have one of my sisters there with me.

The brunch it self was wonderful. They had this silly hat for me to wear, and we had a few hours of chatting, mass chaos of the kids that were there and playing, and lots of yummy food.

After the brunch, Grant and Kira had another surprise up their sleeves. Grant watched the kids for the rest of the day so that Kira and I could go to a spa.

Kira got a facial, and She treated me to a massage. My first one ever, and it was amazing.

Kira was able to spend a little bit more time with our family hanging out until she had to head back to Nashville to pack for a business trip the following day.

Thank you Kira for being such a wonderful sister and friend. You and Andrew have been such a wonderful and positive force in our lives, and I can’t really properly express my thanks. Also Grant is always such an amazing husband and father, and the fact that he still helped do all this stuff for me on top of being stressed with work and providing for our family has been truly humbling. I also wanted to thank all of the wonderful people who have been kind, forgiving, and loving during my life as I have grown up. I have made mistakes, made a fool of myself, and learned how to love my friends and family. I still make mistakes all the time, but I am thankful to know such wonderful people.
